Can you believe how fast November has gone? Only a few more days til the end of an era. The She's So Unusual Shoes era, at least, it's been an era for me. I look back and I'm proud of what I did. Pick up some of my crazy shoes before Dec 1st.

With a heavy heart, I write to you one last time. I've decided to close She's So Unusual Shoes. It's been the best journey I could have ever virtually or really had.
I've learned so much about my self, and my questionable talents. I found I had a voice! I believed in myself! Who could ever believe it!

But all things come to the end. And so, November is the end. Nov 2nd to 30th, all shoes will be $25L a pair. After that, the store will be closed, and the shoes will be retired forever.

I wish I could give every one of you, my customers, a big hug. You have no idea how MUCH you have inspired me, pushed me, helped me. Because of this virtual world, that people joke about all the time, I found out that I could do something. Maybe it's just making pixel shoes, but it's something. I have a confidence that I didn't have before.

I'll still be around, being silly, shopping. Heck, maybe I'll even come back one day and make more shoes. But right now, that seems like something I can't imagine.

Just to stop the rumors, I'm not dying, I'm not leaving just to make an alt and a new business, I'm not running away from a bad romance. It's just time to move on...

Ladies, this one isn't for you.

I've been asked before to make pumps sized for men in SL. Since men's feet are differently sized even when set to 0, shoes need to be made FOR male feet.

I've redone my strip scripted fetish pumps for the discriminating male. Wear the alpha layer, prim shoes and the shoe base. Touch them once to activate the strip script. Then enjoy as your significant other uses the menu to remove your shoes. You will have to manually remove the base the alpha layer.

These fab shoes are transfer only. $195L and available NOW in the main stor e. Comes in 11 colors.

This is also the last week you will be able to get the Sock Monkeh Flats from my lucky chair. After that, they will be pulled from the store.

Happy Rez Day to me! Feb 26th, 2006 I logged into SL for the first time. I conversed with a parrot and moved a beach ball. I looked behind a sign and like all newbies, I took all my clothes off. We started with no skin, system hair, and drawn on shoes. I did my first building, when my RL friend drug me to a Blitz Build game held by Lizbeth Marlowe. I made a copper fountain and took 2nd place. I've been building every since.

For my Rez Day, I'm redoing my entire store, new logo and build. I need to clear out a few things so I'm retiring off 165 pairs of unusual shoes. Each pair is only $25L and most are transfer so you can buy gifts for everyone!

Starlust Specials!

As you know, the Starlust sim collective will be dissolving soon. The times are a changing, and change, well, change sucks.

So, a bunch of people decided to do something. You know, one last hurrah for a place that’s brought us panty raids, unicorn sex rallies, an amazing set of builds, and just general WTF.

Starlust’s Last (one night) Stand. (Ok, so it’s not really one night, but we couldn’t resist the pun of Custer’s last stand, and one night stands. ) It’s actually a weekend long event, to benefit the founders of Starlust, as a way of saying thank you for creating this place, and helping them cover sim expenses in these last months.

There will be kissing booths, exclusive items (designers will donate a percentage of their sales to the Starlust founders), and much more!

Save the date, this weekend, November 12th-14th, for Starlust’s last stand.

I've put out two pairs of shoes for the event. The first are a redesign of my Goldfish Platforms with belly up fish, ucky water and dead plants. The expo is to benefit Souls4Soles, which you can read about here: http://www.soles4souls.org/

Last year's Footwear Expo was to benefit Toys for Tots and ran November 22 to December 6th. We raised $2500 USD for the cause. This year's event will benefit Soles4Souls and we hope to raise one million Lindens this year!

The event will run from August 7 - 22, 2010. Over 50 Shoe Designers from across the grid willl be showcasing their creations (most with new items introduced exclusively at the expo!) and helping to sponsor and support the benefit. In addition there will be a flickr photo contest, a Blogger contest, and a massive blow-out party at the end of the Expo.

We have a couple of exciting new things this year, first up Gatcha! There will be a couple of Gatcha machines on each sim with special items from Adorkable Poses, Boom, Exodi, Glitterati, Whippet & Buck, Diesel Works, Haven Designs, Stellar and Fri.day!

The other thing are our Haybalers, these are another way for non-shoe designers to sponsor the fair and offer a few goodies for sale. Look for them along the paths as you walk around the sims.

My favorite Groups

Today, on Lessons with Rowan.. I wanna talk about SL groups. Yes.. I know.. we can only have 25.. and it sucks.. but I've been around log enough to remember when we could only have 10. THAT sucked, k?

I have about 23 groups that I'm a part of. Some are groups for everyone, some are groups just for rentals and such. Some are for fun, and some are for profit. Lemme tell you about some of the BEST groups in SL at least in my opinion.

#1. Fabulously Free in SL The group was started from the FabFree blog and now has over 7000 members. We share freebie spots, dollerbies, good sales. There are quite a few designer (ahem) in this group and they send out special freebies when we hit the next level of members. I know there are some GREAT ones coming for reaching 7000 members.

#2. Fashion Emergency Started by the Great Six Kennedy of Gurl 6, this group has 3000+ members. Can't find something to wear? Ask the girls and guys of FE. Not alot of notice spam, and sometimes we're a little.. risque in our chatter. But these people know their stuff!

#3. Fashion Consolidated One of the MUST have groups for designers and people who like fashion. TONS of notices, occasional free stuff and no chat. They have strict rules on the designers who get to send notices, so you won't get 4 notices a week from the same person.

#4. New Citizens Inc 11000 people. Ask any darn question in here, and you'll prolly get an answer. NO Spam! No advertising. Tons of free classes on how to make a prim shoe, to how to buy land, to event promotion. There are a bunch of NCI areas in world, each one trying to help newbies and oldbies alike make their way. I'm a proud supporter of NCI!

#5. She's So Unusual Shoes Update Group The inworld version of my mailing list thingie. Nothing special about it, but sometimes I make up funny titles for you to wear. What? It's my blog and I can list any group I want!

So.. if you aren't in my mailing list thingie, you probably didn't know this.. but.. I moved! I left Thistledown, my old spot, to a great new spot on Agard near a bunch of other stores. Lovely little streets.

Took awhile to get all my shoes, minus the retired ones, into the new store... whew! Last count.. over 400 pairs. Imelda eat your heart out. I think everything is easy to see, and see to walk around. I love the stairs.. they are interesting.

So to get you all out to see the new store, and to update your LMs.. I'm having a little old hunt. 4 unique pairs of shoes will be put in tiny boxes and hidden in the store. Light and You!

You might wanna make yourself comfy. This is a long and informative post.

Let's talk about light. The SL Knowledge Base says light

"Only six lights are supported for hardware lighting. The shaders support eight lights, but one is reserved for the sun or moon, and another for a 'backlight' which approximates reflected light from the sun or moon. The list of lights used is determined as follows:

A list of nearby lights is generated.
This list is calculated once per frame.
Six lights are chosen from the list. Priority is based on the effective intensity of each light at the viewer's Avatar. Dynamic lights are given slightly higher priority.
For each object:

With the 'Nearby Lights' setting, all lights are always used."

This means that only 6 sources of light will be rendered and they are usually the ones closest to you. So if you have 8 balls o light hovering around your head, you are pointless. Yay You!

Lighting Tips

There's a lot of versatility in the lighting system, so be creative, experiment extensively, and keep inventing new uses for lights!

If you set Intensity or Radius to 0.000, or set the light's color to black, you might as well uncheck Light because it's visually the same as turning the light off.
Remember, ANY prim you've made can be turned into a light. No matter what shape or size, its light properties can be set independently.
If you want your object to be visible in the dark, but not give off light (like a computer monitor or a soda machine) you can check the Full Bright checkbox on the object's Texture tab.
Lights in motion are dynamic and follow their source prim. For example, carry a lantern in your hand and find your way in the darkness. Or use light prims in a vehicle, perfect for adding that film noir touch to a skittering airplane. Physical objects can also be lit: roll a big glowing red ball down a hill and giggle with glee!
Common sense: the darker it is around you, the more lights will stand out. If it's high noon, you won't see many lighting effects, but as dusk approaches, the local lights will increase.
Like other special effects in Second Life, use lights wisely. Please don't light everything; it not only diminishes the highlights and contrast that a few finely-placed lights can add, but it also slows down performance for yourself and fellow Residents too.
Why six realtime lights, as mentioned above? Because the OpenGL specification which SL uses allows for eight lights in a scene. Specifically in this case: six lights, one for the sun/moon, and one for the backlight representing reflected light. Static (non-moving) lights will be "baked" so you can still see the effect they have on the area. For this and more behind-the-curtain details, please see the related OpenGL technical document.

I think I might even tattoo that on certain people's foreheads. Oh BTW. I'm really good at knowing you're wearing stolen hair, shoes, or other items.. you know how?
This is my friend. Advanced - Rendering - Info Displays - Light. It will show you every prim in the area that is giving off light. It will also show you a yellow cube of how FAR the light is radiating.

WOO! I love fall.. almost as much as I love spring!

I thought about putting out my old sculptie tree with the falling leaves.. when I looked at it.. and I said.. I can do BETTER!

I redid the leaves texture, reworked the script into mono (Thanks Neural for your help!) and added some more limbs. Don't worry.. it's only 13 prims. I also worked on permissions on it, so you can modify the limbs and the leaves on the ground. WOOT!

Right now they are in my store, well. on the porch. There is a tree to see and a box to buy. They are COPY so buy one.. place it everywhere you want.. as long as you have permission to do so, ya know? The old ones are still available, along with my spring cherry blossom tree and my winter trees with snow angel anims on Xstreet.

So NCI, New Citizen's Inc has a sim with Caledon. I've often been asked to do some victorian style shoes. I've been working on these while.. I thought they needed something a little more.. so I added a little chain. and voila! Perfect!

Lesson: Sculptypaint Shadow Baking

From time to time I like to give little lessons. Today's lesson is "How to bake shadows on sculpties you own"

First you need to download Sculptypaint. It's a free program and I've linked you HERE.
Open it completely and install. Yay! You can use it to make sculpties. HERE is the tutorial.
I'm going to show you how I use Sculptypaint to "bake" a shadow map for sculpties I've bought.

First, save your sculptie texture! Open the texture in SL. Click "File" then "save Texture as" and name it something you will remember.

In Sculptypaint, click Load Sculpt Map. You can do this with .tga or .png files. You can even do it with alpha'ed out sculpties. The only ones that don't see to work, are non-full perm sculpties. If you cannot "Save Texture As" then.. well.. you can NOT bake the shadow map.

Next. Click on the object and rotate it, by dragging the mouse pointer around. Give it a good look over. Then click on Texture Sketch at the bottom of the window. Yay! Your sculptie will be black or grey.

Click on Bake Texture, under the Red Green Blue Grey Grey Grey bars in the middle of the right hand side.

Then use the arrows under that to adjust your lighting. If you move your mouse over the shadow map on the top of the right hand side, you will see it move over the sculptie, helping you locate what part of the shadow map is what part of the sculptie.

Save your WORK! Click Save Texture and text will pop up in the windows near the sculptie. That's your shadow map! Yay!

Load your shadow map into Photoshop or your photo editing software of choice. I usually do a Gaussian Blur at first. Then I like to offset by 128pixels each way and do a bit of hand smearing to get rid of any really sharp contrast after the offset.

There is your grey toned shadow map. Alot of creators will use this as a Overlay layer. You choose Overlay from the drop down menu of layer properties. Adjust the opacity to adjust the amount of highlight/shadow you get. Save and upload to SL, and apply to your sculptie prim. Tada! You did it.

It takes a bit of playing around in PS, but playing in PS is how most people get to be so good at it. Don't be afraid to try it.

So. Renee Lowenhart of FabFree blog fame IMs me with an idea for some bachelorette party shoes. I'm game for any type of fun shoe, ya know! So I make some cute little shoes with lace, and bows and little golden bells. Well after that, you need a cute funny veil to wear too! And party favors, and some man candy and a checklist, and a not so spammy gesture.

So I make a cute matching veil, and when you're partying down with your girlfriends, they touch the veil and get a random party favor. A Man Candy cutout, a penis lollipop, a chocolate cupcake with penis candle or a Bachelorette Party shotglass!

The veil and the shoes are giftboxed with a Checklist sign and a funny gesture for you all to use at the club.

This question gets asked alot in a couple different groups. Who makes a good free AO for a new person? I have one in my store, based on the ZHAO HUD. I made it with poses from my good friend Neural Blankes. I needed an ao with a sexy walk and some nicer natural poses. I was tired of my "model" ao where I was talking to someone about business or what have you.. and BAM! I'm thrusting my crotch at them. Also annoying are the ao's where you yawn and stretch or walk around in a circle, or do a little dance like your bladder is full. Really, people!

Here we are in the middle of the year. It's not really summer here in my RL. It's been strangely cold and rainy. I wore a sweatshirt on the 4th of July! This is NOT midsummer in Ohio!

SHE’S SO UNUSUAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

Recently the new store has opened, and next to 3 years of shoes over a 100 new releases are added to the collection.

She’s So Unusual Shoes feels it is time to celebrate and hosts a photography competition with the sizzling theme ‘Unusual Summer’.

Rowan has put on her party hat and offers very exciting outrageous prices!

THE RULES

- Your picture must focus on She’s So Unusual Shoes and/or other products from She’s So Unusual;
- Your picture must fit within the theme ‘Unusual Summer’
- Your picture may feature none, 1, 2 or a 100 persons;
- Creativity and originality are highly appreciated;
- Post-processing (in Photoshop or any software of your choice) is allowed;
- Maximum 3 entries per person;
- Pictures must be posted in the She’s So Unusual Shoes group on Flickr;
- Pictures must be tagged “She’s So Unusual Shoes Photography Competition Summer 2009”. (Please make sure you tag it with the quotation marks so the tag stays one tag);
-Pictures must fall within the ‘safe’ restrictions of Flickr;
-You agree your picture will be possibly used for several marketing outlets, credits will be given.

The Zero Linden store is an amazing place, filled with all sorts of good FREEBIES. Not dollarbies or cheapies. Freebies. It's done out of the goodness of the owner Naastik Rau's heart. As far as I know, the person who OWNS the sim hasn't paid LL and LL is repoing the sim. Naastik needs our help in finding a new place to go and GETTING the new place. hahah.. I've restarted my Flickr group. There's a link on the side of my blog page. But if you look.. I've put a link here in the post. Miskat is my Flickr Guru. I knew NOTHING about Flickr til he yelled at me about letting my group go to pot. So.. any questions can be directed to ME.. but I'll just ask him about it. I know enough to log in and look a pics. Yay me! I did however, on my own, add a Flickr thingie to the side of my blog. Look at me! I can use technology. WOOT! I have special announcement coming tomorrow.. or well.. Sunday night in MY world about Flickr. Keep your eyes here.

I'm in alot of fun groups.. Hey Girlfriends, Fashion Emergency. I enjoy the people I find in these groups. A fun girl named Reagen Lebed asked the group for a wrist bandana.. I knew I had some sculptied parts in my inventory so I could make one.. and I even had some bandana textures.. I whipped one up for her.. and well.. I liked it so much.. I made 8 different colors and tossed them in a fatpack for $100L. They are in the front of the store.. ENJOY! Each one is copy and mod so you can fit it to your wrists..

Ok.. here are the last 5 pairs I've redone..

A some of the first really fun shoes I made were some platforms with an animated spiral on the heel. Here they are updated with scuplties and now they are touch color change. Touch either shoe and pull up a blue menu to pick a color. Each shoe can be colored individually! These are $95L and transfer only.

Ya know.. I don't usually do this kinda thing.. the past is the past. But when we were redoing the store, Kat and I took a good long look at some of my shoes. I realized.. I loved the styles.. and people were still buying them.. but.. I could do SOO much better now. In the rush to get the store done, I went ahead and updated some of my more famous pairs. The Buckle Mules Redux. With my famous stacked wood heel in a new cool shape, leather mule toe with a matched leather strap and gold buckle. Still the same old fab price of $95L. BANDANA DAY!

It's Bandana Day! Bandana Day is July 3rd when all us crazy Hair Lovers trade in our prim locks for a good cause. If you made it to the Hair Fair, I hope you picked up one of these fab $50L bandanas. All money goes to Locks of Love! So hurry down to the Hair Fair and grab one or two.. they are transferable so pick some up for a friend who can't handle the lag at the Fair.

Here I am in the Winx Bandana. I HAD to have it cause it goes SOOO well with my Carmen platforms I put outback at the Shoe Expo in 2008. Of course I had to do it up, old movie poster style. I usually don't do much postprocessing on my photos.. but.. Bandana Day called for it!

If you watched Sex in the City.. like I did.. you might remember those fab shoes Carrie wore.. when Miranda went into labor and Big paid the driver of the carriage to go to the hospital. Maybe it's just me.. eheheh.. Heels with ruffled ribbon down the arch of the foot.. My version have gems across the toes and a bow at the top. NCI SL6B Hunt!

I got a notice in my NCI, New Citizen's Inc group that they were arranging another hunt full of NCI Alumni. I am an alumni, and I frequently hang out at NCI Kuula, listen in on the NCI main group chat, and know alot of the officers and teachers. I HAD to join this hunt.

Grand Reopening

Today is the Grand Reopening of my store, She's So Unusual Shoes! I'm so excited.. it's an amazing build by Miskat Qinan, who over the course of this build has become a great friend. I'm so lucky to have snagged his awesome talents and his kind and generous friendship. This whole thing couldn't have been done without you, Kat. I really and truly appreciate it.
For my customers, I have redone some of your old favorites. In redoing the store, I had a chance to really look back and see how far I've come. I decided to update some of my best sellers. I hope you'll stop by and see them. Sculpties are coooool!
There is a giftbag with two pairs of new shoes, available at the party. Today at Noon SLT. I have hired a great DJ and Kat and I will be hanging around, dancing, chatting, and having fun. Come join us!

New Store Coming!

Hey.. just wanted to let everyone know that She's So Unusual Shoes will be closing Wednesday June 17th at 12:01am SLT. So basically, Tuesday night for most of us. Why are we closing?

I've been working closely with a fantastic builder on a totally new store and a rebranding. Sort of a store makeover if you will. I thought it was time to freshen up the image of She's So Unusual Shoes.. a little more edgy.

We will reopening with a GREAT big party on June 20th at noon SLT. I will be debuting quite a few new shoes at that time and I have some great gifts for all who come. Stazja Kirax is gonna be djing for us and I'll be there to answer your questions, and just talk about shoes. Also at the party will be my friend and amazing builder, Miskat Qinan. He's been so great about this whole rebranding process. From listening to my ideas, tweaking the design, and just basically boosting my confidence in my self and my store, he's really become a great friend.

Come by the store and say goodbye to the old store. I'll miss the old girl.

How to Cut Your Inventory!

Today.. I'm gonna take on a topic CLOSE to my heart. Inventory bloat!

We all have some items in our inventory we can delete. I'm gonna show you an easy way to trim off some of the fat from your folders.

Extra Scripts

1. Open your inventory
2. Make sure it's fully loaded. To get a count, try typing a letter into the search bar, and wait for it to get done load. Clear the search bar.
3. At the top of your inventory window, click File
4. Under File, click Show Filters. A small window will be attached to your main inventory window. It has Animations, Calling Cards, etc.
5. Click the None button to clear all the checkmarks.
6. Click the little square next to the word Scripts
7. Back in your main inventory window, Click the search bar and type in "hover" without the "
8. Wait as your inventory finds ALL the scripts with hover in it.
9. MOST of those scripts are Hovering Text scripts that come in the boxes we buy all the time! We don't need to keep these scripts! Delete as many as you want, but leave the one in your SL library, in case you WANT some hovering text.
10. Repeat with the words "float"
11. Other good worthless scripts to delete are "giveallinventory" "Give all" "delete me" "touch to unpack" "unpacker"

Calling Cards

I can't seem to find the info now, but those Calling Cards in your inventory check the server every so often to see if anyone's become online. Got a folder full? Me too!
Deleting all your Calling Cards WILL not remove people from your friend's list.
Deleting people from your friend's list will NOT remove their Calling Card
Use the Sort at the top of your inventory window and sort by NAME to remove any duplicates from your Calling Cards.
Deleting someone from your friend's list or their Calling Card will NOT send them a message "OMG SoandSo Newb doesn't like you anymore!"

Notecards

Notecards are again, one of the overlooked inventory bloaters. I mean.. we ALL KNOW we have 4000 pairs of shoes, but opening your notecard folder will surprise you.
Use the Sort again and sort by name to get rid of duplicates
Go through them, read them, and if it's REALLY important, copy and paste it to your computer's preferred word processor. Feel free to get rid of any "Zombie Drama" as Tenshi once called it.

Landmarks

OMG. I rarely ever go through my LM folder. I know I have a ton but I do occassionally go through, using the Sort by name and delete any duplicates.
If you are feeling REALLY ambitious, click each LM and teleport! See if it's still a valid place. If not, the TRASH it goes.

Trash

You CAN empty your trash folder! For about a year, when I first arrived in SL, I didn't clear out my trash folder. When I finally did, I swear, the grid sighed in relief. Remember, EVERYTHING that you delete, ends up in your trash folder. Even when you drag a box out of your inventory to open it, that box you deleted is in your trash folder. If the box was copy, and you delete the box out of your inventory, THAT copy of the box goes into your trash folder. See how it bloats?
Give it a quick lookover and empty that sucker! The Grid will smile apon you.

Other Hints

Snapshots - Go through them, but don't be TOO savage in your deleting. After 3 years here, I totally enjoy looking at the random stuff I took pics of way back in the day. Try naming them instead.

Boxes - you just opened a box, and when you go to delete the rezzed box, it gives you a "At least one of the items selected is not copiable. Are you sure you want to delete them?" If you've emptied the box, yes! You don't have to keep the boxes.

Posestands - Most jewelry and hair makers will toss a posestand in each box. When you buy it, you get a free posestand... WOO! But if you're like me.. I have a metric BUTTload of posestands now. Keep the one you like and keep it rezzed in your house. All others can hit the trash. Search for both "posestand", "pose stand", and "stand" Make sure you're only deleting posestands, though!

Basic - Sort by name, and include folders by name, and go through all your different folders looking for duplicates. If they are transferrable, pass them on to someone who could use them!

Textures - Alot of your "free" textures are already in your library. If you get bored sometime, find a prize camping chair and sort through your textures. It's rewarding, if boring.

Lost and Found - Everthing that gets returned to you, ends up in your Lost and Found folder. Try going through it once in a while, especially if you're missing something. If it's full of "object"s, check them out or just delete them!

After doing all this, I recommend that you clear your cache.

1. Edit at the top of your screen
2. Preferences at the bottom of that menu
3. Network tab
4. Clear Cache button
5. Log out.. if you are having ALOT of problems and lag and inventory loss, restart your whole system after logging out
6. Log back in and buy more stuff!

After doing most of these tricks, I've trimmed over 1000 items from my inventory. Try it and see what happens to yours!
